Best 1Password Alternatives in 2026: 7 Options I Compared
Reviewed · Updated
Quick answer: The closest free alternative to 1Password is Bitwarden: unlimited passwords and devices at no cost, $19.80 a year for Premium, open source with yearly audits. Proton Pass (9.5/10 on this site as an alias service) adds hide-my-email aliases on its free plan and costs $35.88 a year for Plus. NordPass is $23.88 for the first year, RoboForm $19.90, Keeper $42.99, against 1Password's $47.88. If you stay inside Apple or Google, the built-in Passwords app and Google Password Manager are free. Prices checked 10/20/2026.
Why people look for a 1Password alternative
1Password is a good password manager. Our 1Password review scores it 7.1/10 after a trial account and a checkout taken to the payment step. The reasons people shop around are specific and dated:
- The price went up. On 03/27/2026 the regular price of Individual rose from $35.88 to $47.88 a year, and Families from $59.88 to $71.88. The public page advertises $2.99 a month for the first year. My trial account’s checkout on 10/09/2026 showed $47.88 plus tax, $52.13 with New York tax.
- People are talking about leaving. A Hacker News thread about the increase drew 209 comments in February 2026. A second one, “Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?”, drew 150 in September.
- No free plan and no refund. The 14-day trial needs no card and turns read-only when it ends, which is fair. After a charge, 1Password’s policy is no refunds for past charges or unused time.
- Defaults. The web app’s first-run prompt to share usage analytics had its switch on. The same checkbox sits in Manage Account.
- You only use Apple or Google devices and already have a password manager built in.

Bitwarden: the closest free match
Bitwarden’s free plan has no limit on passwords or devices and syncs everywhere. That is the thing 1Password’s trial can’t give you past day 14. Premium is $1.65 a month billed annually at $19.80. It adds an authenticator, file attachments, emergency access and security reports.
Families is $47.88 for 6 people, the price of one 1Password seat. The pricing page says “taxes not included.” The code is open source, Cure53 has audited it every year since 2018, and the help center lists SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3 and ISO 27001. Its terms, as read on 10/09/2026, include a 30-day refund policy.
Where it falls short: no affiliate program in our route, so no button here. No test account on this site either, so I can’t speak to its checkout or support. Premium went up in January 2026 from about $10 to $19.80. The side-by-side is on the Bitwarden vs 1Password page.
Proton Pass: free aliases on top of passwords
Proton Pass is the alternative I’ve used from an account. The free Proton account I opened for the Proton Mail run on 10/09/2026 includes Pass with unlimited logins and devices, 2 vaults and 10 hide-my-email aliases. I created an alias and watched it forward.
Pass Plus removes the alias limit and adds a built-in 2FA authenticator, vault sharing and dark web monitoring. It cost $35.88 a year in USD on 10/20/2026. Pass Family is $59.88 for 6 people. The apps are open source, and Proton publishes its audit reports and runs a bug bounty.
Where it falls short: its score on this site, 9.5/10, was earned in our email-alias ranking, not a password-manager run. The Pass checkout and support weren’t tested separately. The pricing page showed our network Polish złoty until I switched its currency selector to USD, so check the currency before you pay. More in the email alias ranking.
NordPass: the cheapest first year with a free plan
NordPass Free stores unlimited passwords and passkeys, syncs and autofills. The catch: Free keeps one device logged in at a time, and switching without logging in again is a Premium feature. Premium was $23.88 for the first year and $35.88 at the regular rate on 10/20/2026, or $37.53 for a 27-month term. Family is $44.28 the first year for 6 vaults.
Its help center gives a 30-day money-back window on the first purchase. Encryption is XChaCha20, and the security page lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2.
Where it falls short: the plans page showed our network a local currency, and its terms page blocked us. The dollar prices come from the pricing service the page itself queries, asked for the United States. The latest named audit I found is Cure53’s from 2020. The full comparison is on the 1Password vs NordPass page.
RoboForm: cheapest paid plan after Bitwarden
RoboForm has a free plan and a Premium plan at $19.90 for the first year, renewing at $29.88. A 30-day money-back guarantee is printed on its pricing page. Family is $31.95 the first year, then $47.75. It’s the oldest form filler on this list. The affiliate program behind the button here forbids coupon pages, so you won’t find codes on this site.
Where it falls short: the free plan works on one device, and app owners report sync problems on phones. Our 10/27/2026 checkout run showed $21.67 with New York tax and the renewal price before a card. The RoboForm review has the rest.
Keeper: the most 1Password-like, slightly cheaper
Keeper Unlimited is $42.99 a year, $4.89 less than 1Password, with a 30-day trial that needs no card. Family is $91.99 for 5 people with 10 GB of storage. The security page names FIPS 140-3 validation and a zero-knowledge design.
Where it falls short: no free plan on the pricing page, and dark web monitoring is a paid add-on. The checkout asks for an email before showing a total, and the terms make every payment final. The family plan costs $20 more than 1Password’s. The side-by-side is on the 1Password vs Keeper page, and the full picture is in the Keeper review.
Dashlane: a refund window and a VPN, at a higher price
Dashlane Premium is $5.42 a month billed annually, about $65.04 a year, with a 14-day trial and a bundled VPN. Its help center gives a 30-day refund. It costs more than 1Password. In May 2026 it disclosed a brute-force attack in which fewer than 20 users’ encrypted vaults were downloaded. No affiliate program in our route, so no button. The side-by-side is on the 1Password vs Dashlane page.
Apple Passwords and Google Password Manager: free, if you stay inside one ecosystem
If every device you own is an iPhone, iPad or Mac, the Passwords app is already there. It arrived with iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, stores passwords, passkeys and verification codes, and syncs them through iCloud Keychain at no cost. If you live in Chrome and Android, Google Password Manager is built into both and syncs through your Google Account.
Both are free and both are already installed. What they lack is the cross-platform reach, hardware-key 2FA and sharing outside the family that paid managers sell. When they’re enough and when they aren’t is the subject of our browser password managers page.
If you stay with 1Password
Use the 14 trial days as your refund window, since there isn’t one after a charge. Turn off the usage-analytics switch in Manage Account. Pay annually only after the checkout shows your state’s tax. Mine showed $52.13 for New York before asking for a card.
Set up the recovery code, which Watchtower flagged as missing on my fresh account. The cancel path is Billing → Cancel subscription. Everything else is in the 1Password pricing breakdown.
What I left out
LastPass is cheaper than 1Password at $36 a year and has a free plan. But a backup of its customer vaults was copied in 2022, so it isn’t on this list. The comparison is on the LastPass vs 1Password page, the full picture is in the LastPass review, and the LastPass alternatives page runs the same exercise from the other side. KeePass is free and open source but has no sync of its own and no company behind it, which puts it outside what this site rates.
Verdict
For most people leaving 1Password, Bitwarden is the first thing to try. The free plan does what the 1Password trial does, forever, and Premium is $19.80. If you want hide-my-email aliases with your passwords, Proton Pass is the one I’d pick among the services that pay this site. It’s free to start, $35.88 for Plus, open source and audited, and the only one on this list I’ve used from an account.
NordPass and RoboForm are the cheapest paid first years with refund windows. Keeper is the closest in feel to 1Password and slightly cheaper for one person. Apple and Google’s built-ins cost nothing if you never leave their ecosystems. Whatever you choose, export from 1Password’s desktop app, import, and delete the unencrypted file.
What we checked
- Test accounts: 1Password 14-day trial opened 10/09/2026. Proton Pass used from the free Proton account opened 10/09/2026. No account at Bitwarden, NordPass, Keeper, RoboForm or Dashlane
- Checkout: only 1Password's, taken to the payment step on 10/09/2026. Every other price here is from the vendor's own pricing page on 10/20/2026, before sales tax
- Vendor pages: pricing pages of all seven, Bitwarden's audit page and terms (10/09/2026), Proton Pass's security page, NordPass's refund article, Keeper's and RoboForm's terms, all captured 10/20/2026. NordPass, Keeper and RoboForm showed our network non-U.S. prices, so their dollar figures were read through a U.S.-located fetch or the vendor's own pricing service
- Public records: 1Password's price increase of 03/27/2026 and the Hacker News migration threads of 02/2026 and 09/2026. Dashlane's brute-force advisory of 05/31/2026 as quoted by The Hacker News. LastPass's incident notices of 2022 and 2023, which is why it isn't on this list
- Where the run stopped: desk review. Bitwarden, Proton Pass, NordPass, Keeper, RoboForm and Dashlane pages were captured on 10/20/2026; no new account was opened at any of them. 1Password facts come from our run on 10/09/2026; Proton Pass facts from the free account opened for the Proton Mail run on 10/09/2026
FAQ

Bitwarden, if you want unlimited devices and sync with no card. Proton Pass, if you also want hide-my-email aliases. Both free plans are unlimited in passwords and devices. NordPass Free is unlimited too but keeps one device logged in at a time. Apple's Passwords app and Google Password Manager are free and already on your phone if you stay inside one ecosystem.
What is the cheapest paid alternative to 1Password?
Bitwarden Premium at $19.80 a year. Then RoboForm Premium at $19.90 for the first year ($29.88 after) and NordPass Premium at $23.88 for the first year ($35.88 after). Proton Pass Plus is $35.88 and Keeper Unlimited is $42.99. 1Password Individual is $47.88. All before sales tax, checked 10/20/2026.
Is Bitwarden as good as 1Password?
It's cheaper and open source, and its audits are published yearly. Our side-by-side is on the Bitwarden vs 1Password page. On refunds it wins outright: Bitwarden gives 30 days, 1Password gives none. I haven't opened a Bitwarden account, so I can't speak to its checkout.
Why do people leave 1Password?
The reasons I found with dates: the regular price rose from $35.88 to $47.88 a year on 03/27/2026. There is no free plan and no refund after a charge. The web app's usage-analytics switch was on by default in my account. Hacker News threads from February and September 2026 discuss moving to Bitwarden, Proton Pass and Apple Passwords.
Can I import my 1Password data into another manager?
1Password exports from its desktop and mobile apps as 1PUX or CSV, unencrypted. Bitwarden, Proton Pass, NordPass, Keeper and RoboForm all list 1Password or CSV among their import sources on their own pages. Delete the export file once the import is done.
