- Verdict: is NordVPN worth it in 2026?
Quick answer: NordVPN is a legitimate, widely used VPN from Nord Security, and Deloitte audited its no-logs policy in late 2025. It costs more after year one: Basic was $74.85 for the first 15 months on 10/27/2026, then $139.08 a year. Our sign-up was blocked, but the checkout showed the tax and the renewal price before the card.
I couldn’t open a test account on 10/27/2026: the Nord Account sign-up page blocked our connection with a Cloudflare page, and a NordVPN account is otherwise created only by paying. I took the checkout as far as the card form. Everything about the apps comes from NordVPN’s documents and from owners.
Summary
- What it is: a VPN that encrypts your traffic and routes it through NordVPN’s servers on up to 10 devices. Higher plans add malware and scam tools, a password manager, storage and, in the U.S., credit monitoring.
- Price: Basic $74.85 for the first 15 months, then $139.08 a year. Complete $89.85, then $219.48. Prime $134.85, then $296.28. Monthly from $14.99. U.S. prices from 10/27/2026.
- Best thing I found: the checkout printed the sales tax, the total and the renewal price above the card form, before any account existed.
- Weakest point: year two. Basic renews at $139.08, almost twice the first term, and the refund window closes 30 days after the first purchase.
- Watch for: the 7-day trial needs a card or PayPal, and the plan starts by itself if you don’t cancel.
- Not for you if you want a free VPN, phone support, or a company whose terms aren’t governed by the law of Panama.
How we rate NordVPN
| Criterion | Grade | What it’s based on (10/27/2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Results (30%) | Good | From documents: kill switch on every desktop and phone platform, NordLynx and OpenVPN protocols, six no-logs reviews by PwC and Deloitte, the latest in 12/2025, and a 2025 Cure53 app test. Our own connection test didn’t run |
| Price & value (20%) | Good | No free plan. Basic is $74.85 for 15 months, a low first term, then $139.08 a year. The monthly plan is $14.99. Higher plans bundle a password manager, storage and, in Prime, $1M identity theft insurance |
| Checkout honesty (15%) | Good | The checkout showed 8.875% New York sales tax, a $74.96 total and the $139.08 renewal price before the card. The offer terms say renewals are charged up to 14 days early, after an email notice |
| Data handling (15%) | Good | The checkout asks for an email and payment details. NordVPN says it keeps the email, a VPN username and transaction IDs. Self-service deletion with an email code. One server breach in 2018, disclosed in 2019 |
| Ease of use (10%) | Good | From third-party sources: 4.7 from 711,493 App Store ratings and 4.6 from 1.37M Google Play reviews. Owners on Reddit and the App Store report dropped connections after recent updates |
| Support (10%) | Good | 24/7 live chat, starting with an AI chatbot, and an email form. No phone support. Our question was not sent |
Account type tested: none. The sign-up was blocked on 10/27/2026, so the grades for Results and Ease of use rest on documents, store ratings and owner reports. The weights and the scale are on the methodology page, and the checkout grades follow the US Privacy Checkout Test.
What’s good
- The checkout showed the sales tax, the total and the renewal price before the card: $6.11 tax, $74.96 total, “The renewal price is $139.08/year.”
- The pricing page prints the renewal price under every plan, in small type, next to the intro price.
- The no-logs policy has been reviewed six times by outside firms, PwC in 2018 and 2020 and Deloitte from 2022 to 12/2025.
- A 30-day money-back guarantee on the first purchase, with an automated refund button in the Nord Account, per the help center.
- Kill switch on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux, per the help center on 10/27/2026.
- Self-service account deletion in the Nord Account, with an email code.
What’s bad
- No free plan. The 7-day trial needs a card or PayPal and turns into a paid plan unless you cancel.
- Basic renews at $139.08 a year after a $74.85 first term. Complete renews at $219.48 and Prime at $296.28.
- The checkout terms allow renewal charges up to 14 days before the renewal date.
- No phone support. Chat starts with an AI chatbot.
- Federal court records show eight lawsuits by individual plaintiffs against nordvpn S.A. and related companies, filed from 2024 to 2026. One reached a class settlement agreement in 07/2026.
- Owners in 10/2026 reported connections stuck on “Connecting…” and a Disconnect button replaced by Pause on iPhone.
What NordVPN is and how it works
NordVPN belongs to Nord Security, the group behind NordPass, NordLocker and Incogni. Its terms of service, last updated 08/10/2026, name nordvpn S.A. in Panama City as the company you contract with. App Store listings show the seller as Nordvpn S.A.
The service works in three steps. You pay at checkout, which creates a Nord Account from your email address. You install the app on up to 10 devices and sign in. The app connects you to a NordVPN server, and your traffic leaves from that server’s address instead of your home or phone network.
The plans differ in what sits around the VPN. Basic is the VPN, scam and phishing filtering, and a dark web monitor for five emails. Complete adds anti-malware, an ad and tracker blocker, a password manager and 1 TB of storage. Prime adds credit monitoring and identity theft insurance in the U.S.
Results in the US Privacy Checkout Test
NordVPN’s row in the US Privacy Checkout Test was recorded from the checkout itself, opened without an account on 10/27/2026. Three things stood out:
- With the tax country set to the United States and ZIP 10001, the order summary added 8.875% New York sales tax, $6.11, for a $74.96 total before the card.
- Above the purchase button: “The renewal price is $139.08/year, sales tax may apply.” The renewal amount is on the screen where you pay.
- The base price was $68.85 for Basic’s 15-month first term. That is what our non-U.S. connection was offered. The U.S. pricing page showed $74.85 for the same plan.
The offer terms under the checkout add two details that matter at renewal. Annual plans are “billed annually (up to 14 days before the renewal).” For terms longer than a month, NordVPN will “always send a notification email before the charge is processed.”
The account itself was out of reach. The Nord Account sign-up page answered our connection with a Cloudflare block, so the dashboard, the apps and the cancel screen are described from the help center below.
Pricing summary
NordVPN sells three plans, Basic, Complete and Prime, on monthly, 1-year and 2-year terms. The 1-year term runs 15 months for the first payment and the 2-year term 27 months. On 10/27/2026 the U.S. pricing page showed Basic at $14.99 a month, $74.85 for 15 months or $94.23 for 27 months.
Every plan renews at a yearly price that is printed in small type under the intro price. Basic renews at $139.08, Complete at $219.48 and Prime at $296.28. Sales tax is added at checkout by ZIP code. Our browser was shown Canadian dollars and a plan named Ultra, so the dollar figures come from the U.S. version of the same page.
The full table, the cancel steps and the refund rules are on the NordVPN pricing page.
Free trial
There is no free plan. NordVPN’s help center, updated 10/22/2026, describes a 7-day free trial for new users in 15 countries, including the United States, on 1-year and 2-year plans. You need a credit card or PayPal to start it. If you don’t cancel within the seven days, the plan begins at the price shown when you started.
Android users who install from Google Play get a separate 3-day trial, run by Google. The 30-day money-back guarantee is a third option, and the only one that returns money you already paid. What each route costs you is on the NordVPN free trial page.
Interface and ease of use
I didn’t get inside. With the sign-up blocked and no account, I relied on the stores and the help center. The App Store listing showed 4.7 from 711,493 ratings at version 9.16.0, released 10/19/2026. Google Play showed 4.6 from 1.37 million reviews and 100 million downloads. The Chrome extension showed 4.4 from 9,100 ratings and 15 million users.
The help center’s Windows guide has you sign in through the browser, then press “Secure my connection,” and the status changes to “Connected.” The Fire TV guide uses a Quick Connect button that picks a server for you.
Owners were less settled in 10/2026. A redesign the product team posted about on 10/15/2026 drew complaints about a Pause button replacing Disconnect on iPhone. Setup by platform is on the how to use NordVPN page.
Apps and devices
NordVPN has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV, plus extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge, per its support center on 10/27/2026. One subscription covers 10 devices at once. Routers can run it too, and the help center has a tutorial for each common router firmware.
The help center’s Windows guide: download NordVPNInstall.exe, run it, allow the changes, click Install, then log in through the browser. On a Fire TV Stick you install from the Amazon Appstore. The kill switch article notes one gap: “the Kill Switch feature is not available on Amazon Fire TV Stick.” On other platforms it blocks traffic when the VPN drops.
Speed: what independent tests show
We don’t run our own speed tests. Three outlets published NordVPN numbers in 2026, on different setups, and all three say they may earn affiliate commissions.
- PCMag (Justyn Newman and Neil J. Rubenking, 04/15/2026) measured with Ookla’s Speedtest, VPN on against VPN off. Download speed dropped 1.94%, upload 5.54%, and latency rose 67.04%.
- CNET (Moe Long, 10/20/2026) ran hundreds of tests on 1 Gbps Ethernet and 500 Mbps Wi-Fi. NordVPN lost 27.2% of download speed on average, against 40.8% for Proton VPN in the same round.
- Tom’s Guide (Mo Harber-Lamond, tests in 03/2026) used a Windows cloud PC on a 10 Gbps line in the eastern U.S. NordLynx averaged 1,249 Mbps on a nearby server, second only to Proton VPN at 1,475 Mbps.
The spread between CNET and Tom’s Guide shows how much the test rig matters. Your speed depends on your own line and the server you pick.
Logging policy and audits
NordVPN’s help center says it “does not log any of your activity online.” It lists what it keeps: your email address, a username for the VPN connection and the transaction or order ID for refunds. Its no-log page says the company is based in Panama.
Outside firms have checked that claim six times, per NordVPN’s own pages. PwC Switzerland reviewed it in 2018 and 2020, and Deloitte in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Deloitte Lithuania ran the latest engagement from 11/10 to 12/12/2025 and covered standard, Double VPN, obfuscated and Onion Over VPN servers. NordVPN posted about it on 02/03/2026.
Two caveats. The full reports open only after you log in to a Nord Account, and NordVPN says it doesn’t publish excerpts. The no-log page, dated 09/28/2026, still says “five-times verified” and omits the 2025 engagement. Separately, Cure53 tested the apps and infrastructure in 05, 06 and 10/2025 and, per NordVPN’s post, found no critical vulnerabilities.
Streaming and servers
The servers page claims “thousands of ultra-fast VPN servers across 225 locations” on 10/27/2026, without an exact server count. Streaming support is a feature NordVPN advertises, and its help center keeps separate troubleshooting articles for several streaming services. I didn’t test any of them.
Owners describe mixed results. In 10/2026 Reddit threads reported broadcasters’ apps detecting NordVPN addresses, and an App Store reviewer wrote on 10/07/2026 that the service was “rock solid” for the streams they watch. NordVPN’s own articles treat blocking by a service as a known issue, not a fault of the plan.
What it’s like to be a U.S. customer: price, cancellation, data, support
What you’ll actually pay at checkout
Basic: $74.85 for the first 15 months on the U.S. pricing page, then $139.08 a year. The checkout we reached added 8.875% New York sales tax before the card, $6.11 on a $68.85 base, for $74.96. Auto-renewal is on by default, and the renewal price was printed above the purchase button. Payment by card, PayPal, Google Pay or crypto.
What’s in the plan (and what isn’t)
Basic: VPN on 10 devices, scam and phishing filtering, a dark web monitor for five emails. Complete adds anti-malware and an ad blocker on desktop, a password manager, 1 TB of storage and U.S. bank transaction monitoring. Prime adds 1-bureau credit monitoring and up to $1M identity theft insurance from HSB Specialty Insurance Company. Dedicated IP and Incogni data removal cost extra on every plan.
How to cancel and get a refund
The help center’s path is Nord Account, Billing, Cancel next to auto-renewal, then Cancel auto-renewal, with a confirmation email. App Store, Google Play and Amazon purchases are canceled in the store. Canceling stops the next charge and does not refund by itself.
Refunds: 30 days from the first purchase. Support sends a link, and an eligible payment shows a Refund button in the account. A renewal is not refundable under the guarantee “unless local laws require otherwise.” App Store purchases are refunded only by Apple. I didn’t reach the cancellation screen.
What personal data they ask for — and how to delete it
The checkout asks for an email address and payment details, and a ZIP for the tax. NordVPN says it keeps the email, a VPN username and the transaction ID, and recommends crypto for anonymous payment. Deletion is self-service: Nord Account, Account settings, Delete account, then a code sent to your email. A request form is the alternative, and support answers within 24 hours. Not tested.
Who can sign up (U.S. only, state limits, age)
NordVPN sells worldwide. The terms require users to be 18 or older and are governed by the law of Panama, with Panamanian courts for disputes. Sales tax is added by ZIP at checkout. I found no state restrictions on 10/27/2026.
Support: channels and hours (ET)
Live chat around the clock, starting with an AI chatbot that hands over to an agent, and an email form at the bottom of every help article. The help center states “NordVPN does not offer phone support.” Both channels ask for an email address, and I had no test inbox, so I sent no question.
What we saw inside the account
I couldn’t open a test account on 10/27/2026: the Nord Account sign-up page blocked our connection, and the only other way in is to pay. Everything in this review about the apps comes from NordVPN’s published pages and owner reports, not from inside the account.
Is NordVPN safe and legit?
Nord Security is a large company, and NordVPN has the record most buyers look for. Six outside reviews of the no-logs policy, a 2025 Cure53 test of the apps, and a kill switch on every major platform. I found no FTC case. The one known breach involved a single rented server in Finland, accessed around 03/05/2018, which NordVPN disclosed on 10/21/2019.
Court records add context. CourtListener lists eight federal cases by individual plaintiffs, filed from 2024 to 2026, against nordvpn S.A., Tefincom S.A. and related companies. One in North Carolina was dismissed on 11/19/2024. In Illinois the parties reported a signed class action settlement agreement on 07/28/2026, and a New York case is paused pending settlement. Press reports tie several of these suits to auto-renewal practices.
A VPN changes what your internet provider and your Wi-Fi network can see. It doesn’t make you anonymous to the sites you log in to, and it doesn’t replace the protections covered in what a VPN does.
What other users say
On Trustpilot, NordVPN had 51,355 reviews and 4.2/5 on 10/27/2026, with 72% five-star. The profile says the company invites reviews and pays for a Trustpilot subscription. The App Store showed 4.7 from 711,493 ratings and Google Play 4.6 from 1.37 million. I didn’t verify each case.
I read the 100 newest r/nordvpn posts (10/04–10/27/2026) through an archive, because reddit.com blocks our connection, and the 100 newest U.S. App Store reviews. Themes with three or more independent mentions on two platforms:
- Connections that drop or hang. “Several times a day I have to disable then enable my VPN again,” one owner wrote on Reddit on 10/26/2026. Twenty-eight of the 100 App Store reviews mention dropped or stuck connections.
- Refunds and renewal charges. An App Store reviewer wrote on 10/16/2026 that a $4.99 offer was “billed as $121 annually” in small print. Trustpilot reviews on 10/26 and 10/27/2026 describe refused refunds.
- The iPhone redesign. Posts on Reddit (10/27/2026) and three App Store reviews object to Pause replacing Disconnect and to a removed Shortcuts action.
The praise is consistent too. A Trustpilot reviewer on 10/27/2026 called it “the most stable and reliable networking service that I’ve used,” and other reviews thank named support agents.
Who it’s for (and who it’s not for)
It’s for you if:
- You want a mainstream VPN with outside audits and a kill switch on every device you own.
- You’ll pay for two years up front and accept the renewal price after that.
- You want a password manager, storage or U.S. credit monitoring bundled with the VPN.
- You want to see the tax and the renewal price before you enter a card.
It’s not for you if:
- You want a free plan. Proton VPN has one with no data cap.
- You’d keep paying past the first term without checking the renewal date.
- You need phone support.
- You’d rather your provider’s terms point to a U.S. or Swiss court than to Panama.
What I’d change
- Print the renewal price at the same size as the intro price on the pricing page.
- Charge on the renewal date, not up to 14 days before it.
- Publish the Deloitte report, or at least its conclusion, without a login.
- Update the no-log page to count the 2025 engagement.
- Let the 30-day guarantee cover the first renewal.
Alternatives to NordVPN (on this site)
- Proton VPN has a free plan with no data cap, a Swiss company behind it and yearly Securitum no-logs audits with public reports. VPN Plus is $53.88 for the first year, then $83.88. See the Proton VPN review and NordVPN vs Proton VPN.
- Surfshark and Private Internet Access are the other paid VPNs this site covers, with prices compared on the NordVPN alternatives page.
If you’re setting up a VPN for the whole house, how to set up a VPN on your router covers NordVPN’s router guides.
Verdict: is NordVPN worth it in 2026?
NordVPN is worth it if you’ll use it for at least a year and you want the audits and the extras of a big provider. The checkout is honest about tax and renewal, the no-logs claim has outside reviews behind it, and the apps cover everything from a phone to a router.
The reasons to hesitate are money and time. Basic costs $74.85 for the first 15 months and $139.08 a year after. Renewals can be charged two weeks early, and the refund window closes 30 days after the first payment. Our sign-up was blocked, so the apps here are described from documents.
Pick NordVPN if you’ll set a reminder before the renewal. If you want a free plan or a lower renewal price, Proton VPN is the comparison to read first.
What we checked
- Test account: couldn't open — the Nord Account sign-up page showed a Cloudflare block to our connection on 10/27/2026, and an account is otherwise created only by paying. Apps, connection and kill switch come from NordVPN's help center, store listings and owner reports
- Checkout: opened without an account on 10/27/2026 and taken to the card form, with a New York ZIP. It showed the sales tax, the total and the renewal price before the card. Nothing was paid
- Prices: the U.S. version of the pricing page, read through a reader on 10/27/2026, because our connection was shown Canadian dollars. The checkout offered our connection a lower first-term price, and both figures are shown
- Vendor pages: pricing page, checkout offer terms, 18 help center articles (trial, refund, cancel, delete, support, install guides, kill switch), terms of service (08/10/2026), servers page, audit and breach posts — read 10/27/2026
- Support: no question sent. Live chat and the email form both ask for an email address, and we had no test inbox
- User reports: Trustpilot (51,355 reviews, 4.2/5), App Store (4.7, 711,493 ratings), Google Play (4.6, 1.37M), Chrome Web Store (4.4, 9.1K), the 100 newest r/nordvpn posts and 100 newest U.S. App Store reviews — read 10/27/2026; themes counted at 3+ independent mentions
- Public records: FTC cases searched for NordVPN, Nord Security and Tefincom (no results); federal dockets on CourtListener for nordvpn S.A. and related companies — 10/27/2026
- Not checked: the apps, connection speed, the kill switch, streaming, the Nord Account dashboard, the cancel flow
- Where the run stopped: the card form at checkout on 10/27/2026; the Nord Account sign-up page was blocked by Cloudflare for our connection, so no account, app or cancellation screen was reached
FAQ
Is NordVPN legit?
Yes. NordVPN is run by Nord Security, and its terms name nordvpn S.A. of Panama as the company you contract with. It has 4.7 from 711,493 App Store ratings and 4.2 from 51,355 Trustpilot reviews as of 10/27/2026. I found no FTC case. Individual plaintiffs filed several U.S. lawsuits against it in 2024–2026, and one reached a class settlement agreement in 07/2026.
Is NordVPN safe to use?
The design and the audits say yes. NordVPN's no-logs policy was reviewed by PwC and Deloitte six times, most recently 11/10–12/12/2025, and Cure53 tested the apps in 2025. One rented server in Finland was accessed in 2018, which NordVPN disclosed in 10/2019. A VPN hides your traffic from your network, not your identity from the sites you log in to.
Does NordVPN keep logs?
NordVPN says it doesn't log your online activity. Its help center lists what it keeps: your email, a VPN username and the transaction ID for refunds. Deloitte's 2025 engagement checked the no-logs claim on several server types, but the full report is only visible after logging in to a Nord Account.
How much does NordVPN cost?
On 10/27/2026 the U.S. pricing page showed Basic at $74.85 for the first 15 months, Complete at $89.85 and Prime at $134.85, then $139.08, $219.48 and $296.28 a year. Monthly plans were $14.99 to $29.99. Sales tax is added at checkout. The NordVPN pricing page has the full table.
Is there a free version of NordVPN?
No. NordVPN has no free plan. It offers a 7-day trial to new U.S. users on 1- and 2-year plans, and the trial needs a card or PayPal. There is also a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first purchase. The NordVPN free trial page explains the catch.
What do people on Reddit say about NordVPN?
In the 100 newest r/nordvpn posts I read through an archive (10/04–10/27/2026), the repeat complaints were connections stuck on “Connecting…” and refunds or renewal charges. An iOS update that swapped Disconnect for Pause also drew posts. The same themes appear in recent App Store reviews. I didn't verify each case.
