- Verdict: is Proton VPN worth it in 2026?
Quick answer: Proton VPN is safe by the measures we can check: a Swiss company, open-source apps and a no-logs policy audited by Securitum every year from 2022 to 2026, with public reports. The free plan has no data cap but one device. VPN Plus was $53.88 for the first year on 10/27/2026, then $83.88.
I couldn’t open a free account on 10/27/2026: the sign-up stopped at a human verification step that asks for a puzzle or a code sent to another email. I took the VPN Plus checkout as far as the card form. Everything about the apps comes from Proton’s documents and from owners.
Summary
- What it is: a VPN from Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. It encrypts your traffic, hides your IP address and blocks ads and malware on paid plans.
- Price: Free with no time limit. VPN Plus $53.88 for the first year, then $83.88. Monthly $9.99. Proton Unlimited $119.88 a year. U.S. prices verified 10/27/2026.
- Best thing I found: a free plan with no data cap, and a checkout that showed the tax, the total and the renewal price before any account existed.
- Weakest point: the free plan’s limits. One device, a random server in one of 10 countries, and a wait of up to 10 minutes between server changes.
- Watch for: refunds go through a support form, and owners on Trustpilot describe refunds paid as account credit.
- Not for you if you need phone support, or a free plan you can use on a laptop and a phone at once.
How we rate Proton VPN
| Criterion | Grade | What it’s based on (10/27/2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Results (30%) | Excellent | From documents: kill switch on every plan including Free, open-source apps, yearly Securitum no-logs audits from 2022 to 2026 with public reports, and a free plan with no data cap. Our own connection test didn’t run |
| Price & value (20%) | Excellent | A free plan with no data cap and no card. VPN Plus is $53.88 the first year and $83.88 after, with 10 devices and every server |
| Checkout honesty (15%) | Excellent | Before any account, the checkout showed 8.875% New York tax, US$58.66 for 12 months and the US$83.88 renewal, with a 30-day money-back line |
| Data handling (15%) | Good | Sign-up asks for an email or a new Proton address and a human check. Self-service deletion in account settings. No disclosed breach. Deletion removes the whole Proton Account |
| Ease of use (10%) | Excellent | From third-party sources: 4.6 from 124,948 App Store ratings and 4.7 from 1.44M Google Play reviews, and a one-field sign-up. Owners report drops on iPhone in 10/2026 |
| Support (10%) | Fair | A support form and an email address for everyone, live chat on paid plans, no published hours. Our question was not sent |
Account type tested: none. The free sign-up stopped at human verification on 10/27/2026, so Results and Ease of use rest on documents, store ratings and owner reports. The weights and the scale are on the methodology page, and the checkout grades follow the US Privacy Checkout Test.
What’s good
- A real free plan: no time limit, no data cap, no ads and no card, per the pricing page and the sign-up on 10/27/2026.
- The checkout showed the tax, the 12-month total and the renewal price before any account, with a New York ZIP: US$4.78 tax, US$58.66 total, renewal US$83.88.
- Securitum has audited the no-logs policy every year from 2022 to 2026, and Proton links each report as a public file.
- The VPN apps are open source, per Proton’s open-source page.
- VPN Plus renews at $83.88, the same yearly price after a 1-year or a 2-year first term.
- Free works on a router, which then counts as the one connection, per the router guide.
What’s bad
- Free means one device at a time, a server chosen for you in one of 10 countries, and a wait of 45 seconds, then 10 minutes, between changes.
- No phone support, no published hours, and live chat only on paid plans.
- Owners on Trustpilot in 10/2026 described refunds paid as account credit and purchases through Google Play that never applied.
- The server count differs from page to page, from 18,304 Plus servers to 21,722 servers on the same day.
- Deleting the VPN account deletes the whole Proton Account, including any Proton Mail address on it.
What Proton VPN is and how it works
Proton VPN is run by Proton AG, a Swiss company in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, which its terms of service of 10/09/2026 place under the supervision of the non-profit Proton Foundation. The same account opens Proton Mail, Pass, Calendar and Drive.
You create a Proton Account with an email address or a new @proton.me address. You install the app, sign in and connect. Your traffic then leaves from a Proton server’s address instead of your own network’s. On the free plan Proton picks the server. On paid plans you choose from the full list, including Secure Core servers.
VPN Plus adds NetShield, which blocks ads, malware and tracker scripts, plus streaming and P2P support. Proton Unlimited adds the paid versions of Mail, Pass, Calendar and Drive.
Results in the US Privacy Checkout Test
Proton VPN’s row in the US Privacy Checkout Test was recorded from the VPN Plus checkout, opened without an account on 10/27/2026. Billing defaulted to our connection’s country, Canada, and I switched it to the United States, New York, 10001.
- The summary added “Tax 8.875%” of US$4.78 and showed US$58.66 for 12 months before the card.
- Above the button: the discounted US$53.88 “is valid for the first 12 months. Then it will automatically be renewed at US$83.88 (excl. tax) for 12 months.”
- Payment options were card, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The text names no renewal date.
The free sign-up went less far. After the email step, Proton opened a Human Verification dialog with two tabs: a puzzle CAPTCHA, or a code sent to another email address. This site doesn’t solve CAPTCHAs in its runs, and we had no second inbox, so no account was created.
Pricing summary
Proton VPN has a free plan and two paid ones. On 10/27/2026, with the pricing page set to U.S. dollars, VPN Plus was $9.99 a month, $53.88 for the first 12 months or $83.76 for the first 24 months. Both long terms renew at $83.88 every 12 months. Proton Unlimited was $12.99 a month or $119.88 a year, with no first-year discount.
Tax is added at checkout by state and ZIP, 8.875% in New York City. Plans renew automatically, and the terms allow a full refund within 30 days of the first purchase. What the free plan includes, and where it stops, is on the Proton VPN free plan page.
Free plan
Proton Free has no time limit and asks for no card. The pricing page lists one device at a time, medium speed, and servers in 10 countries “randomly selected.” The help center names the 10: the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada and the United States. There is no data cap and no ads.
The limits show up when you want a particular server. Proton connects you to the fastest free server for your location. If you change, the next one is random, and you wait 45 seconds before the first change, then 10 minutes between later ones. Streaming, P2P and Secure Core are paid. The Proton VPN free plan page walks through what that means day to day.
Interface and ease of use
I didn’t get inside, so the interface comes from the stores and the help center. The App Store listing showed 4.6 from 124,948 ratings at version 7.5.2. Google Play showed 4.7 from 1.44 million reviews and 100 million downloads. The Chrome extension showed 4.7 from 4,700 ratings and 2 million users.
The sign-up itself is short: one email field, with the option to create a new @proton.me address in the same box, and a plan summary beside it. Owners in 10/2026 praised the free tier and complained about drops on iPhone, covered under what other users say.
Apps and devices
Proton VPN has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Chromebook, Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV, and extensions for Chrome and Firefox, per its download menu on 10/27/2026. Free covers one device. VPN Plus covers 10. The help center lists a kill switch and DNS and IPv6 leak protection on every plan.
Routers count as a single connection, so a free account on a router covers the devices behind it. The browser extension has limits Proton spells out: it protects only the browser’s traffic, and Proton says it is more exposed to fingerprinting than the full app.
Speed: what independent tests show
We don’t run our own speed tests. Three outlets published Proton VPN numbers, on different setups, and all three say they may earn affiliate commissions.
- PCMag (Justyn Newman, 11/14/2025) measured from Portland, Oregon with Ookla’s Speedtest, VPN on against off. Download speed dropped 20.11% and median latency rose 351.26%.
- CNET measured a 21% average loss in its review of 03/01/2025. In its 2026 round, reported in the NordVPN review of 10/20/2026, Proton VPN lost 40.8%, the most of four VPNs.
- Tom’s Guide (Olivia Powell, updated 04/27/2026) reported a WireGuard average of 1,475 Mbps and 1,548 Mbps from the U.S. to the U.K., on a 10 Gbps line.
The results disagree because the rigs do. Tom’s Guide tests on a 10 Gbps cloud PC, CNET on home gigabit and Wi-Fi.
Logging policy and audits
Proton’s help center says it keeps “no session usage logs.” It lists what it doesn’t log: the websites you visit, your traffic, your IP address, your session lengths and your location. It credits Swiss law for part of that, and says data kept for maintenance is protected by full-disk encryption on its servers.
Securitum, a Polish security firm, has audited that claim every year from 2022 to 2026. Proton’s audit post links each report as a public file. The 2026 conclusion, as Proton quotes it, found nothing indicating the examined servers log “browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, network traffic contents.” I didn’t open the PDFs. Proton also publishes the apps’ source code and per-app audit reports.
Streaming and servers
Streaming is a VPN Plus feature that Proton advertises, and the help center has a separate streaming troubleshooting guide. I didn’t test any service. Owners in 10/2026 reported banks, shops and streaming apps rejecting Proton’s addresses, which is the cost of sharing IP addresses with many users.
The server count depends on the page. On 10/27/2026 the pricing page said 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries. The checkout said 21,202+ across 149+ countries. The servers page counters showed 149 countries, 21,722 servers and 197 locations, and the text below them said 18,304 Plus servers and 125 Secure Core servers.
What it’s like to be a U.S. customer: price, cancellation, data, support
What you’ll actually pay at checkout
VPN Plus: $53.88 for the first year, then $83.88 a year. With New York billing the checkout added 8.875% tax, US$4.78, for US$58.66 before the card. Auto-renewal is on and printed above the button with the renewal amount, without a date. Payment by card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
What’s in the plan (and what isn’t)
Free: one device, medium speed, a random server in 10 countries, no data cap, kill switch. VPN Plus: 10 devices, every server, streaming, P2P, Secure Core, NetShield and live chat. Proton Unlimited adds Mail, Pass, Calendar and Drive. No plan includes identity theft insurance or credit monitoring.
How to cancel and get a refund
The help center’s path: sign in at account.protonvpn.com, open Subscription, scroll to Cancel subscription and click Continue. Then confirm Cancel subscription and submit a reason. Paid features last to the end of the period, then the account drops to Free. App Store and Google Play purchases are canceled in the store.
Refunds: the terms give a full refund if you cancel within 30 days of the initial purchase and ask through the support form. After 30 days, payments are non-refundable. The help center says card refunds take 5 to 10 business days, and bank transfers and cash can’t be refunded. I didn’t reach the cancellation screen.
What personal data they ask for — and how to delete it
Sign-up asks for an email address, or a new @proton.me address, a password and a human check. Paid plans add payment details with country, state and ZIP. Deletion is in the web app: All settings, Account and password, Delete your account, a reason, a confirmation and your password. It deletes the whole Proton Account, and Proton never reuses the username. Not tested.
Who can sign up (U.S. only, state limits, age)
Proton VPN sells worldwide. The terms allow users from 13, with a parent’s or guardian’s consent for minors. U.S. consumers agree to individual arbitration and a class action waiver, with a right to opt out, and to the courts of Geneva for claims brought in Switzerland. Tax is added by state and ZIP. I found no state restrictions on 10/27/2026.
Support: channels and hours (ET)
A support form and the address vpn@support.proton.me for every user, and live chat for paid plans. Proton publishes no hours. The form needs an email address for the reply, and I had no test inbox, so I sent no question.
What we saw inside the account
I couldn’t open a test account on 10/27/2026: the free sign-up stopped at a human verification step. Everything in this review about the apps comes from Proton’s published pages and owner reports, not from inside the account.
Is Proton VPN safe and legit?
Proton AG is an established Swiss company, and Proton VPN has the record privacy buyers ask for. Five yearly no-logs audits by Securitum with public reports, open-source apps, a kill switch on every plan. I found no FTC case, no consumer class action on CourtListener and no disclosed breach as of 10/27/2026.
Two things to weigh. Deleting the VPN account deletes your whole Proton Account, including any Proton Mail inbox. And U.S. buyers sign an arbitration clause with a class action waiver unless they opt out. A VPN also doesn’t make you anonymous to the sites you sign in to, as what a VPN does explains.
What other users say
On Trustpilot, Proton VPN had 1,021 reviews and 2.1/5 on 10/27/2026, with 59% one-star. The profile is separate from Proton Mail’s, and the company invites reviews. The App Store showed 4.6 from 124,948 ratings and Google Play 4.7 from 1.44 million. I didn’t verify each case.
I read the 200 newest r/ProtonVPN posts (10/08–10/27/2026) through an archive, because reddit.com blocks our connection, and the 100 newest U.S. App Store reviews. Themes with three or more independent mentions on two platforms:
- Drops, mostly on iPhone. One owner wrote on Reddit on 10/24/2026 that it “randomly drops all traffic for like 5-20 seconds.” App Store reviews from 10/14 and 10/23/2026 say the same.
- Sites that block Proton. An App Store reviewer wrote on 10/24/2026 that sites “are regularly rejecting tunnels from proton.” Reddit posts from 10/18–10/22/2026 name banks and streaming apps.
- App-store purchases. “PSA: Don’t buy Proton subscriptions through Google Play” (Reddit, 10/21/2026), plus Apple and Trustpilot reports of upgrades that didn’t apply.
Trustpilot reviews from 10/09 to 10/21/2026 add refunds paid as account credit. The praise is mostly about the free plan: “Free tier works great for what I need,” an App Store reviewer wrote on 10/25/2026.
Who it’s for (and who it’s not for)
It’s for you if:
- You want a free VPN with no data cap for one device, or for a home router.
- You want a provider with yearly public no-logs audits and open-source apps.
- You already use Proton Mail or Pass and want one account.
- You want to see the tax and the renewal price before you create an account.
It’s not for you if:
- You need a free plan on several devices at once.
- You want to pick your server on the free plan.
- You need phone support or published support hours.
- You’d lose a Proton Mail address you rely on if you later delete the VPN account.
What I’d change
- Let the free plan pick a country, even with the cooldown.
- Print the renewal date next to the renewal amount at checkout.
- Use one server count across the pricing page, the checkout and the servers page.
- Refund to the original payment method by default and say so on the checkout.
- Publish support hours, and open live chat to free users for billing questions.
Alternatives to Proton VPN (on this site)
- NordVPN has no free plan, but a bigger feature set in its higher plans and six outside no-logs reviews. Basic is $74.85 for the first 15 months, then $139.08. See the NordVPN review and NordVPN vs Proton VPN.
- Mullvad charges one flat €5 a month with no free plan and no affiliate program here. It is on the NordVPN alternatives page.
The basics are in what is a VPN, and how to set up a VPN on your router covers Proton’s router guide.
Verdict: is Proton VPN worth it in 2026?
Proton VPN is worth it, and the free plan is the reason to start there. No data cap, no card, audited no-logs claims and open-source apps put it ahead of most free VPNs. VPN Plus at $53.88 for the first year and $83.88 after is cheaper at renewal than the big names.
The reasons to hesitate are the limits and the paperwork. Free is one device and a random server. Support is a form unless you pay. Owners in 10/2026 reported refunds as credit and app-store purchases that didn’t apply.
Start on the free plan, buy on the website rather than in an app store, and keep the 30-day window in mind.
What we checked
- Test account: couldn't open — the free sign-up on 10/27/2026 stopped at a human verification step that asks you to solve a puzzle or enter a code sent to another email. Connection, free servers and apps come from Proton's help center, store listings and owner reports
- Checkout: VPN Plus opened without an account on 10/27/2026 and taken to the card form with New York billing. It showed the tax, the 12-month total and the renewal price before the card. Nothing was paid
- Prices: the pricing page switched to U.S. dollars with its own currency selector, 10/27/2026
- Vendor pages: pricing page, checkout, free sign-up, help articles on plans, free servers, cancellation, refunds, no-logs, browser extension limits and support, account deletion, terms of service (10/09/2026), servers page, audit blog — read 10/27/2026
- Support: no question sent. The support form needs an email address for the reply, and we had no test inbox
- User reports: Trustpilot (1,021 reviews, 2.1/5), App Store (4.6, 124,948 ratings), Google Play (4.7, 1.44M), Chrome Web Store (4.7, 4.7K), the 200 newest r/ProtonVPN posts and 100 newest U.S. App Store reviews — read 10/27/2026; themes counted at 3+ independent mentions
- Public records: FTC cases searched for Proton VPN and Proton AG (no results); federal dockets on CourtListener (no consumer class action found) — 10/27/2026
- Not checked: the apps, connection speed, the kill switch, streaming, the account dashboard, the cancel flow
- Where the run stopped: the human verification step of the free sign-up and the card form of the VPN Plus checkout on 10/27/2026; no account, app or cancellation screen was reached
FAQ
Is Proton VPN safe?
By the measures we can check, yes. Proton AG is a Swiss company, its VPN apps are open source, and Securitum has audited the no-logs policy every year from 2022 to 2026 with the reports public. I found no FTC case and no disclosed breach. A VPN hides your traffic from your network, not your identity from sites you log in to.
Is Proton VPN legit?
Yes. Proton VPN is made by Proton AG of Geneva, the company behind Proton Mail, under the supervision of the non-profit Proton Foundation per its terms. It has 4.7 from 1.44 million Google Play reviews. Its Trustpilot score is 2.1 from 1,021 reviews as of 10/27/2026, mostly about refunds and app-store purchases.
Does Proton VPN keep logs?
Proton says it doesn't log the sites you visit, your traffic, your IP address, session lengths or location. Securitum's 2026 audit, quoted on Proton's blog, found nothing indicating the examined servers log browsing, DNS queries or traffic contents. The account itself holds your email and billing details.
How much does Proton VPN cost?
On 10/27/2026: VPN Plus $9.99 a month, $53.88 for the first year then $83.88, or $83.76 for the first two years then $83.88 a year. Proton Unlimited, which adds Mail, Pass and Drive, was $119.88 a year. The free plan is $0. Tax is added at checkout by state and ZIP.
Is Proton VPN really free?
Yes. Proton Free has no time limit, no data cap, no ads and no card. The limits are one device at a time, medium speed, and a server picked at random in one of 10 countries. Streaming and P2P are paid features. The Proton VPN free plan page has the details.
What do people on Reddit say about Proton VPN?
In the 200 newest r/ProtonVPN posts I read through an archive (10/08–10/27/2026), repeat complaints were connections that drop, especially on iPhone, and sites or bank apps that block Proton's addresses. Purchases through Google Play or Apple that didn't apply also came up. Praise centers on the free plan. I didn't verify each case.
