Try Aura

Quick answer: Aura is a real identity theft protection service from Aura Sub, LLC, sold with antivirus, a VPN and data broker removal. On 10/08/2026 one adult cost $144 for the first year after a 50% discount, and the renewal price wasn't shown. The 14-day trial asked for a home address before payment, and I stopped there.

I started Aura’s enrollment on 10/08/2026 with a test email and name. The next step asked for a home address “to verify your identity,” and this site doesn’t enter a made-up one. Everything below comes from that enrollment screen and Aura’s published pages, not from inside an account. This is not legal or financial advice.

Summary

  • What it is: a subscription from Aura Sub, LLC that bundles identity theft protection, credit monitoring, insurance, antivirus, a VPN, a password manager, and data broker removal.
  • Price: Individual $12/month billed annually ($144 a year), Couple $22, Family $32. Month to month, they’re $15, $29, and $50. Prices verified on 10/08/2026 on Aura’s site.
  • Best thing I found: every adult plan lists 3-bureau credit monitoring and up to $1,000,000 in insurance per adult, with the policy summaries public.
  • Worst thing I found: the renewal price isn’t on the pricing page or the enrollment screen. The terms say it’s shown in your account dashboard.
  • Refunds, read carefully: 60 days on annual plans only, and only by phone.
  • Not for you if you only want to stop new credit in your name. A credit freeze at the three bureaus is free.

How we rate Aura

CriterionGradeWhat it’s based on (10/08/2026)
Results (30%)GoodEvery adult plan lists 3-bureau credit monitoring, credit lock, title and transaction alerts, and $1M insurance per adult. Nothing tested in an account
Price & value (20%)Good$144 for the first year of Individual after a 50% discount, $15 month to month. No published renewal price
Checkout honesty (15%)Good$0 today and $144 shown up front, but the crossed-out $288 is higher than 12 monthly payments of $15
Data handling (15%)GoodHome address asked before payment. Deletion through a privacy portal or by phone, per the privacy policy
Ease of use (10%)GoodNot seen: no account. App ratings are high, but owners report software and login problems
Support (10%)Good24/7 phone and email. Our email of 10/08/2026 had no reply when this page was written

Account type: none (stopped at the address step). Run date: 10/08/2026. How each criterion works is on the methodology page, and the checkout rules are on the US Privacy Checkout Test page.

What’s good

  • The enrollment screen showed “Pay $0 now” and the yearly total of $144 before any payment step.
  • Every adult plan lists credit monitoring at all three bureaus, not one or two.
  • The insurance summaries are public, with limits, deadlines, and exclusions.
  • One subscription also covers antivirus, a VPN, a password manager, and data broker removal.
  • On Trustpilot, Aura answered every negative review, per the page on 10/08/2026.

What’s bad

  • The pricing page and enrollment screen don’t say what the plan costs at renewal.
  • The crossed-out “$288.00” for Individual is more than a year of the $15 monthly plan, which comes to $180.
  • Refunds work only on annual plans, only within 60 days, and only by phone.
  • The enrollment asks for a home address before the payment step, on a screen that says it’s for identity checks.
  • Owners on Trustpilot and BBB report long holds and help that’s hard to reach.

What Aura is and how it works

Aura is run by Aura Sub, LLC, with an address at 250 Northern Ave in Boston, per its terms and BBB profile (10/08/2026). The BBB lists Identity Guard, Intersections, and Pango among its other names. Plans are sold on aura.com, and enrollment runs on my.aura.com.

The service works in four steps, according to Aura’s pages:

  1. You enroll with your name, address, and identity details, then verify your identity.
  2. Aura monitors your credit at three bureaus, your SSN and personal details, linked accounts, and property titles.
  3. It sends alerts when it sees a change, a breach, or a suspicious transaction.
  4. If your identity is stolen, a U.S.-based fraud team helps, and the insurance can repay some costs.

None of these steps could be tested without passing the address step.

Results in the US Privacy Checkout Test

I went through Aura’s enrollment for Individual yearly on 10/08/2026 up to the address step and stopped there. Three things stood out:

  • The order summary showed “$288.00 $144.00 billed yearly,” a green “Discount Applied: 50% off” banner, and “Pay $0 now. Enjoy your 14-day FREE trial.”
  • No renewal price and no sales tax line appeared on that screen.
  • The steps ahead read Create account, Name, Address, Details, and Payment, so identity details come before the card.

Pricing summary

Aura has three identity plans and a Kids plan. Billed annually, Individual is $12 a month, Couple $22, and Family $32. Month to month, they cost $15, $29, and $50. The Kids plan, $10 or $13, is parental controls without identity theft insurance. Prices verified on 10/08/2026 on Aura’s site.

The “Save 50%” label has no footnote on the pricing page. Aura’s terms say the plan renews at the price in your account dashboard, with an email before renewal. The full table, cancel steps, and refund rules are on the Aura pricing page.

Free trial

Aura has no free plan, but every plan comes with a 14-day free trial, per its pricing page (10/08/2026). The enrollment screen showed “Pay $0 now,” and the terms say a card “may be required” for a trial. The pricing footnote adds that full access “depends on identity verification and credit eligibility,” and a trial can be used once per customer.

Interface and ease of use

I didn’t see the dashboard: enrollment stopped before the account opened. The Aura app had 4.7 from 109K ratings on the App Store and 4.6 from 38.7K reviews on Google Play on 10/08/2026. Six of the 23 low-star Trustpilot reviews we read say the software wouldn’t install, broke other apps or websites, or didn’t load on a new phone.

Monitoring: what it watches (credit, SSN, dark web, bank)

Every adult plan lists 3-bureau credit monitoring, an instant credit lock, home and auto title monitoring, financial transaction alerts, and SSN and personal information monitoring, per the pricing page (10/08/2026). The credit score comes from your Equifax file and is “for educational purposes,” per the page’s footnote. Child members on the Family plan get only online account and SSN monitoring.

None of this was tested in an account. SSN monitoring was not tested.

Alerts: how fast and how noisy

I couldn’t test alerts without an account. One low-star Trustpilot review from 06/2026 says Aura’s alerts came “days after an occurrence.” A BBB review from 08/2026 says Aura missed five suspicious withdrawals from a credit union account. I didn’t verify either case.

Insurance and what it actually covers

The insurance comes from a group policy issued to Aura by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, an Assurant company. The plans page promises “$1M per adult,” and the policy summaries set these limits:

PlanPolicy summaryTotal limitStolen funds
Individual$1M summary, updated 04/29/2025$1,000,000 per membership per 12 monthsup to $1,000,000, inside the total
Couple$2M on the plans page, no $2M summary listednot publishednot published
Family$5M summary, updated 08/15/2025$5,000,000 per membership per 12 monthsup to $1,000,000, inside the total
The $5M summary: $5,000,000 per membership per 12 months, with stolen-funds recovery capped at $1,000,000. Screenshot taken on 10/08/2026

You must call 1-866-237-5240 within 60 days of finding the loss and file sworn proof within 60 days. Stolen funds must be reported within 90 days, and you must first ask your bank for the money back. Fees for lawyers, investigators, and accountants are capped at $125 an hour.

The policy excludes losses caused by you or an immediate family member, losses found before your coverage started, losses tied to a business, and cryptocurrency. It also excludes any loss while you weren’t an active, paid member. Some coverages in the $5M summary aren’t available in New York or Texas. Terms apply. This is not legal or financial advice.

On multi-adult plans, the $5M summary says the primary account holder gets the Family Plan benefits. Each other adult is “individually entitled to benefits under a Single Membership plan.”

Restoration: who helps if your identity is stolen

Aura says its “U.S. Based Expert Fraud Remediation” team builds a plan and works with you until the issue is fixed (pricing page, 10/08/2026). Restoration was not tested. One low-star Trustpilot review from 06/2026 says the insurer denied a claim for a hacked crypto account, which matches the policy’s crypto exclusion.

What it’s like to be a U.S. customer: price, cancellation, data, support

What you’ll actually pay at checkout

On 10/08/2026 the enrollment screen showed $144.00 billed yearly for Individual, after $288.00 crossed out, and $0 due today for the 14-day trial. I didn’t reach the payment step, so I didn’t see a sales tax line or the final total. Plus sales tax — varies by state.

Aura’s terms, effective 10/01/2026, say the plan renews “at the price shown in your account dashboard or otherwise communicated” and that Aura emails you before renewal. They also allow fee changes with 30 days’ notice.

Terms §1.2: renewal is “at the price shown in your account dashboard,” and Aura doesn't take cancellations by mail. Screenshot taken on 10/08/2026

What’s in the plan (and what isn’t)

Individual covers one adult and 10 devices, with $1M insurance, 3-bureau credit monitoring, and the antivirus, VPN, and password manager. Couple covers two adults and 20 devices. Family covers five adults and unlimited kids, and it’s the only plan with spam call protection included. Cyber insurance for scams is an add-on, per the contact page.

How to cancel and get a refund

Cancel online: sign in, click the gear icon, open Membership, click Cancel Membership, then Cancel Online, per Aura’s help center (10/08/2026). Your plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for. The terms say Aura doesn’t accept cancellations by mail.

Refunds: annual plans bought on aura.com or by phone get 60 days from the first purchase, and you request one by calling 1-833-552-2123. If you started with a trial, the trial date counts as the purchase date. Monthly plans and renewals aren’t refunded, per the refund policy and help center.

What personal data they ask for — and how to delete it

Enrollment asked for an email and a password, then your name, then your home address “to verify your identity.” The Details and Payment steps came after that, and I didn’t see what they ask for. Credit monitoring generally needs an SSN, but I didn’t reach a screen that asks for one.

To delete your data, Aura’s privacy policy points to its Privacy Portal, +1 (844) 914-2991, or privacy@aura.com. It keeps data “for as long as you have an account” and for legal needs. A BBB reviewer in 09/2026 wrote that they found “no option to permanently delete my account” in the app or on the website after canceling a trial.

Who can sign up (U.S. only, state limits, age)

Aura’s terms allow U.S. and Canadian residents 18 or older, or 13 and up with a parent. Disputes go to binding arbitration under Delaware law. Some coverages in the $5M insurance summary aren’t available in New York or Texas.

Support: channels and hours (ET)

Phone at 833-552-2123 and email at support@aura.com, with support listed as 24/7 (contact page, 10/08/2026).

I emailed our standard question about refunds and data deletion on 10/08/2026 at 2:44 p.m. ET. There was no reply when this page was written, and I’ll add it when one arrives.

What we saw inside the account

I couldn’t open a test account on 10/08/2026: enrollment stopped at the home address step. What I saw stops at the enrollment screen shown above.

Is Aura safe and legit?

Aura is a real company with an A+ BBB rating, and the BBB lists it as accredited since 07/18/1996. I found no FTC action and no CFPB complaints against Aura’s identity theft service on 10/08/2026. An FTC case from 2016 against “Aura Labs” is about a blood pressure app from a different company.

What other users say

On Trustpilot, Aura had 1,321 reviews and 4.3/5 on 10/08/2026, with the note that it hadn’t invited customers recently. The BBB profile showed 199 complaints in 3 years, 64 in the past 12 months, and 127 reviews averaging 1.14/5. I didn’t read Reddit.

Four complaints passed our threshold of three independent mentions on two platforms in 24 months:

  • Hard to reach support and long holds: 8 mentions (Trustpilot 6, BBB 2), 2026.
  • Billing at renewal or refunds refused after 60 days: 9 mentions (Trustpilot 4, BBB 5), 2026. In several BBB replies, Aura closed the account and refunded anyway.
  • Software or app not working: 8 mentions (Trustpilot 6, BBB 2), 2026.
  • Spam and data removal weaker than expected: 4 mentions (Trustpilot 3, BBB 1), 2026. One Trustpilot reviewer wrote that it “hasn’t done me a bit of good” against 50 calls a day (07/2026).

Most of the 1,321 Trustpilot reviews are positive, and they praise patient support staff. I didn’t verify each case.

Who it’s for (and who it’s not for)

Aura fits you if:

  • You want credit monitoring at all three bureaus plus antivirus and a VPN in one bill.
  • You’d use the insurance, and you’ve read the limits and deadlines.
  • You’re covering a family, where the $5M Family plan costs $32 a month billed annually.
  • You’re fine requesting a refund by phone within 60 days.

Look elsewhere if:

  • You only want to stop new credit in your name. The FTC says a credit freeze at the three bureaus costs nothing (consumer.ftc.gov). Our identity theft steps start there.
  • You want to know the renewal price before you sign up.
  • You’d rather pay month to month and keep a refund option.

What I’d change

  • Publish the renewal price next to the first-year price.
  • Use a crossed-out price that someone actually pays, or drop it.
  • Let annual customers request a refund online, not only by phone.
  • Show sales tax and the total before the card step.
  • Put a delete-account button in the app and on the website.

Alternatives to Aura (on this site)

  • LifeLock publishes its renewal prices and has a 30-day trial, but Core’s stolen-funds limit is $25,000.
  • Optery covers data broker removal only, from a free scan to $249/year, if that’s the part you care about.

The full comparison is on our best identity theft protection page.

Verdict: is Aura identity theft protection worth it in 2026?

Aura is worth a look if you want 3-bureau credit monitoring, insurance, and device security under one subscription, especially for a family. The plan features and the published insurance summaries are its strongest parts. The missing renewal price, the inflated crossed-out price, and phone-only refunds pulled the score down.

Start the trial only if you’ll check the renewal price in your dashboard and call within 60 days if you change your mind. If you only want to block new credit, freeze your credit for free first. This is not legal or financial advice.

FAQ

Is Aura legit?

Yes, in the sense that it's a real company, Aura Sub, LLC in Boston, with published plans, insurance documents from American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, and 24/7 phone support. I found no FTC action or CFPB complaint against its identity theft service on 10/08/2026. Its BBB profile lists 199 complaints in 3 years.

How much does Aura identity theft protection cost?

On 10/08/2026, Individual was $12 a month billed annually, which enrollment showed as $144 for the year, or $15 billed monthly. Couple was $22 or $29, and Family $32 or $50. Aura's pricing page doesn't say what the plan costs when it renews.

Does Aura have a free trial?

Yes, 14 days on every plan, and the enrollment page showed “Pay $0 now.” Aura's terms say a card may be required. The trial date counts as the purchase date, so the 60-day refund window on annual plans starts that day.

Does Aura's insurance really cover $1 million?

Up to $1,000,000 per membership per 12 months on the $1M policy summary, with stolen funds capped at $1,000,000 within it. You must call the insurer within 60 days of finding the loss, and losses caused by an immediate family member or involving cryptocurrency are excluded. This is not legal or financial advice.

How do I cancel Aura and get a refund?

Cancel online under the gear icon, then Membership and Cancel Membership, per Aura's help center. Refunds are for annual plans within 60 days of the first purchase, and you request them by calling 1-833-552-2123. Monthly plans and renewals aren't refunded.

Does Aura remove my data from data brokers?

Every plan on the pricing page lists data removal “from 425+ Data Brokers, People Search Sites, Junk-mailers, & Google Search Results” (10/08/2026). I couldn't see the removal results without an account. Three low-star Trustpilot reviews from 2026 say spam and broker removal did less than they expected.
